Local communities provide critical support to their schools through levy and bond elections.
Every two to four years, school districts ask voters to renew school levies to support the day-to-day operations of their schools. Without school levies, many school districts would lose between 16 and 24 percent of their funding.
School levies provide funding for teachers, textbooks and technology, smaller class sizes, transportation, and electives and extracurricular programs such as music, art, gifted programs and sports.
School bond measures provide funding to renovate or build new schools to ensure students learn in safe, secure and modern classrooms. School bond elections require a supermajority (60 percent) vote approval to pass.
School levy and bond elections typically occur in the spring on special election dates. Washington state voters will be mailed a ballot for school levy and bond elections about 18 days prior to an election.
