Archive of Ballot Measures

LEV has sponsored two statewide initiatives to the people and supported a constitutional amendment, which required approval by voters.

LEV has also taken positions on various ballot measures that could impact public education.  Below is more information on the most recent measures:

Initiative 728 (2000)

Initiative 728, the class size initiative, passed by nearly 72% in November 2000.  I‐728 has demonstrated that targeted new investments can create significant and sustained results for a school district whether it is tackling class size problems or increasing early learning opportunities.

Since 2001, I‐728 has provided over one billion dollars in funding to improve student learning.

I-884: Education Trust Fund Initiative (2004)
Initiative 884, the Education Trust Fund Initiative, received over 1.1 million votes in the November 2, 2004 election, but it did not pass. We will continue to work toward the goals of I-884 in the legislative session and beyond.

Goals of the I-884 Education Trust Fund:

  • Create 10,000 new high-quality preschool spaces for children who need them most;
  • Reduce class sizes and improve student achievement by fully funding Initiative 728;
  • Raise the base pay for teachers and school employees, and community and technical college employees, to to what they would be receiving if the Legislature hadn’t suspended I-732 last year;
  • Provide additional classes in high school and support parent involvement;
  • Expand Promise scholarships for the top 30% of graduating high school seniors and financial aid to keep college affordable for working and middle class students;
  • Fund 25,000 additional enrollment slots in college in community and technical colleges and four-year universities and 7,000 new enrollments in high demand fields; and
  • Invest in university-based research that generates new businesses and jobs.

Simple Majority for School Levies (2007)

Together we achieved a great victory for the one million public school children in our state.  The approval of EHJR 4204, Simple Majority for School Levies, is an important step forward for our public education system.

Our victory is largely due to the incredible grassroots effort in communities across the state.  More than 350,000 phone calls were made by over 6,000 volunteers to get out the vote for schools.  The late surge in approval votes is a testament to the success of your efforts.  This is why 4204 passed with 50.61 percent.

Thanks to your hard work and support, dozens and dozens of school levies have passed benefiting thousands of kids across state.
