This November there will be many important races on your ballot, and one that won’t — a seat on the State Board of Education. Unlike state legislators, members of the State Board of Educationare either appointed by the governor or elected by school board members across the state. While less visible at times, members of the SBE play an important role in setting education policy, including high school graduation requirements, system-wide accountability and credit requirements.
The seat up for election is currently held by Connie Fischer, who joined the SBE as a special appointment at the beginning of the year. The special election this November is for the remainder of the term from the vacated position.
