Calling all public schools and non-profits!
The U.S. Department of Education today released details on its $650 million Investing in Innovation Fund, which is part of the historic $5 billion investment in school reform in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
The grants will support new and proven programs that help close the achievement gap and improve outcomes for students.
School districts can apply for the grants, and non-profits can form partnerships with schools to submit applications.
Grants would be awarded in three categories:
- Scale-up Grants: The largest possible grant category is focused on programs and practices with the potential to reach hundreds of thousands of students. Applicants must have a strong base of evidence that their program has had a significant effect on improving student achievement.
- Validation Grants: Existing, promising programs that have good evidence of their impact and are ready to improve their evidence base while expanding in their own and other communities.
- Development Grants: The smallest grant level designed to support new and high-potential practices whose impact should be studied further.
For more information, view the Dept. of Education’s press release.

New Intern…
Posted on 06. Oct, 2009 by Genna.

Hi, I’m Genna, a sophomore at the University of Washington, and I’m excited to be interning with LEV this fall! I’m a political science major, so it’s fun to be participating in politics rather than just learning about them in a lecture hall. I went all the away through the Seattle Public Schools , so I have a ton of first-hand experience with the positive and negative aspects of local schools.
Here’s to a great quarter with a great organization!

Protect our schools – vote NO on I-1033
Posted on 06. Oct, 2009 by Kelly.
Last month, my kids returned to school and to more crowded classrooms. Next year, when one goes off to college, our family could pay up to 14 percent more in college tuition.
Tim Eyman’s Initiative 1033 would make things worse for students and families across Washington State. It would reduce state revenue for investments in education, health care and other critical services.
As voters, we need to educate ourselves and get the word out about why we need to vote NO on I-1033.
Join us for a conference call on I-1033, Wednesday, October 7th from 7:00 - 7:30 PM. Send an e-mail to info@educationvoters.org to RSVP and to receive the conference call information.
The conference call will cover:
- Overview of I-1033
- Specifics to Education
- Campaign overview and how you can help
- Your Questions
I hope you’ll join me for this important conference call on I-1033.
