Gov. Gregoire supports new funding for K-12 and higher education

Washington’s budget shortfall threatens the future prospects for thousands of students in our state’s public schools, colleges and universities. Budget cuts could mean layoffs for thousands of teachers and cuts in new enrollment slots at two and four year colleges.
Gov. Gregoire is throwing her support behind two funding sources to provide some relief to schools and higher education. The governor is asking lawmakers to temporarily lift the levy lid to allow school districts to collect additional levy dollars that voters have already approved. This would provide $68 million a year for 75 school districts across the state.
The governor also supports giving two-year colleges the authority to raise tuition by up to 7 percent and four-year colleges by up to 14 percent. Lawmakers have proposed increasing financial aid for eligible students to offset increases in tuition.
