Hi all,

We know the stimulus funding is on the way, but we don’t know how much, what’s it’s for, and what problems it will solve.

Well, here is your first step to understanding. I put together a one-page document with all of the funding for education that we will recieve from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and what the funding will be used for. One caveat, this information changes regularly (that’s why you’ll notice a date on my document).

I know you’ll have questions though and I’m here to answer them.

The stimulus package includes about $283.3M for IDEA in WA, which is great news for districts because federal Special Ed funding has historically fallen short of the promised 40%. Currently, our district backfills this shortfall from local levy dollars to the tune of about $3M per year.

I was originally overjoyed at this news, thinking that we could now free up that $3M to offset some of the I-728 cuts. However, I’m now being told that non-supplant language will prevent us from recovering those levy dollars and using them to save jobs of teachers who aren’t in Special Ed programs.

Can you help explain why this might be true? And is there anything can do about it?
